Once upon a time, to record sound, you had to be in a studio. In the dawn of recorded music, when everything was mechanical, it took a lot of effort to capture the recorded sound of choirs and orchestras. Even in the era of electric recording systems, there was a need for large reel tape recorders and a lot of other equipment.

Fortunately, times have changed. We can now capture superb sound quality on smartphones and pocket digital recorders. We can capture sound almost anywhere in high resolution that exceeds CD quality.

Australian company RØDE is one of the leading brands in the development of portable sound capture. The Sydney-based company dominates the market for video microphones and many other audio equipment for outdoor use. RØDE has just announced the release of the AI-Micro, an ultra-compact dual-channel interface that records high-quality sound on any mobile device or computer.

The new AI-Micro has two microphone inputs backed up with high-quality preamps and can record in high resolution, up to 24-bit / 48kHz, allowing creatives to capture sound on almost any device. The AI-Micro’s inputs are auto-sensing so it can instantly detect whether a mic has a TRS or TRRS jack, then automatically adapts the input without the need for adapters.

The first input can also be configured as a single TRS stereo input so that virtually any microphone with a 3.5mm output can be connected to the AI-Micro, including RØDE VideoMics, ties and systems wireless like the RØDE Wireless GO. It even works with stereo microphones like the Stereo VideoMic Pro. The AI-Micro also includes a high-power headphone jack that can provide clear, latency-free audio monitoring and playback.

Weighing less than 20 grams, the AI-Micro is superbly compact and an ideal pocket recording studio that can be taken anywhere. Designed primarily to connect to smartphones, tablets and computers, via its USB output, the AI-Micro is plug-and-play compatible with macOS, Windows, iOS and Android devices. It also comes with high quality USB-A, USB-C, and Lightning cables, making it quick and easy to set up.

The AI-Micro is compatible with RØDE Connect, RØDE’s free podcasting and streaming software for Mac and Windows. This allows up to four microphones to be connected to a computer with level controls, solo and mute buttons, as well as studio-quality audio processing with a single click. Processing effects include a noise gate, the legendary APHEX Aural Exciter, as well as Big Bottom effects. Using the AI-Micro with RØDE Connect allows anyone to record professional quality podcast or live streams with a basic 3.5mm microphone.

RØDE Central is another app from the Australian company. It allows users to configure the AI-Micro on a computer or mobile device, including adjusting the input gain and headphone output level, as well as switching between “Merged”, ” Split ”and“ Stereo ”, as well as the activation of the built-in pass filter. The RØDE Reporter mobile app is another software that can configure the AI-Micro for broadcast-quality recording in the field by reporters and multimedia journalists.

This new interface is RØDE’s latest product to help audio creators and professionals capture audio anywhere. It has some really powerful features in such a light and ultra-compact package that is easy to use. Sounds like this could be the perfect pocket recording studio.

Price and availability: The AI-Micro is available now and costs $ 79.
