Tokyo Police Club 10th anniversary celebration for their third album Champion – released on June 8, 2010 – could be delayed slightly due to the pandemic, but the lineup formed by Newmarket is still going out of its way: first a vinyl re-release, then a series of anniversary shows in Toronto and now they shared a new studio version of the then unreleased track “Top 5”.

In a tweet, the band said they called the recording “the definitive studio version of a track that has been circulating since the early days.” Fans have long searched for an official recording of the live shows favorite, and TPC has finally delivered – because they always give people what they want.

As the story goes, a reader poll suggested the top five reasons for everything – so here we are. “Top 5” and the lists of its namesake are both nostalgic and timeless, managing to move closer to the MySpace era while still being comfortable on Buzzfeed. And the song’s warm tones arrive just in time for the start of the year-end playlist season!

Earlier this year, Exclaim! met keyboardist Graham Wright on how Champion was the group’s “big swing”.

Listen to “Top 5” in all its glory in the studio below. Does it crack your top five TPC tracks?

Following this week’s concerts at Lee’s Palace, the band will take their commemorative anniversary performances on the road with an American tour.
