The legendary photo

50 years ago, on August 8, 1969, the Beatles stopped traffic as they exited London’s EMI recording studios to cross the black and white Abbey Road pedestrian crossing.

Photographer Iain Macmillan made history for standing on a stepladder and taking pictures, as John LennonRingo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison returned and crossed the road three times.

Only six photos of the walk were taken, and the fifth was chosen to go down in history.

Today, the crosswalk has become a haven for fans looking to recreate the album’s iconic cover art.
