A new recording studio hopes to find the latest local talent in the Lanarkshire music scene

A new recording studio set up in Lanarkshire hopes to discover some of the region’s best young bands and musicians.

‘Sound and Fury Records’ was started by Jack Oliver of Blantyre band The Naked Feedback, which aims to make music-making more affordable for young and up-and-coming local artists.

The musician has transformed his home’s detached garage into a welcoming studio ready to turn artists’ songs into reality.

Jack says it’s time he put his acquired expertise in band recording and audio production to good use, which will surely help many budding talents in the community.

He told Lanarkshire Live: “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but it was the lockdown that really kicked it all off.

“I have a degree in band recording and audio production, so I thought why not just set up a studio right next to my house and use all that expertise to start recording local bands, because it’s always been a passion.

Lanarkshire musician Jack Oliver offers to help locals bring their songs to life

“It’s something I’ve always loved doing and just wanted to bring something local as most studios are miles away in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

“If we can do something in South Lanarkshire that is affordable, it will be good for the area.”

From his own experience trying to make records with bands over the years, Jack says common obstacles are the high costs of using a recording studio; as well as the distance people have to travel to find professional installation.

And in many cases, that’s what drives talented musicians to give up on their dream.

Sound and Fury Records will also operate as a record label and is looking for bands and musicians of all genres and ages to come and record one-on-one with Jack to create ready-to-release songs.

The label can offer recording, mixing, and even help with release strategies, live gigs, and marketing.

Blantyre Park Farm’s spacious studio contains all of Jack’s personal gear, and he’s ready to help new artists build their tracks.

The semi-rural setting contributes to the peaceful recording process and the metallurgical health of the artists.

Jack explained: “The plan so far is to have young bands, people who are starting their first bands and want to get into music or go further.

“I remember being 17 or 18 and being put off by how much money the studios were asking for, so I want to do something that won’t put people off music.

“If we can keep it local and bring in some bands for the first time, then maybe we can kick-start their music careers and their lives.

“In Glasgow you can pay between £200 and £400 a day to record and most of the time you don’t even make a song. For someone young that’s a lot of money.

“So what I do for local bands is charge £100 a day, so that’s really affordable compared to anywhere else.

“It’s all I’ve built over the years and it’s to make it affordable for young artists.

“It’s a home studio but a little more private and welcoming.

“Music is an outlet for people. No one knows what’s going on in people’s lives and I just want it to be as inclusive and friendly as possible.

“It’s a peaceful, quiet place for people to come, record and let go.”
