Greensky Bluegrass Shares “Last Winter in Copper Country” Studio Jam With Holly Bowling [Video]

Green Kentucky bluegrass On Tuesday, I dug through the archives for a studio version of “Last Winter In The Copper Country” with keyboardist holly skittles (Phantom light). The recording is from the 2022 sessions Stress dreams and took place on September 22, 2020 at Guilford Sound in Guilford, Vermont

Written by Joshua Davis of Steppin’ in“Last Winter in Copper Country” was a setlist staple for Greensky Bluegrass dating back to 2010. The confidence with which the jamgrass ensemble composes a composition is evident in this live studio take, spreading out the improvisation as the scenic Vermont countryside graces the visual accompaniment. Bowling’s delicate piano blends easily into the rootsy sound – and without shaking too many leaves on entry – enveloping the acoustic instruments in a soft outer layer.

As a mandolinist/singer Paul Hoffman wrote about the recording experience,

when we went to guilford to have ‘stress dreams’, the greatest joy came simply from playing music together. we tuned into our musical friend, holly, being near the studio. naturally, we invited her to join us before we even knew what she had to play on. we decided to play her on the title track and she crushed it.

Holly hadn’t played with anyone in a long time. adding keys to a track was great. we all clapped loudly from the control room, but we really had to dig something. together. Direct.

just for fun, just because, and with the intention of opening it up completely, we all went into the room to play ‘Last Winter in Copper County’.

outside in vermont, the seasonal change was present and beautiful. Holly was pregnant with a son. the literal ties to the song were wild. it was powerful and I’m glad we indulged.
