NEW YORK (CBSNew York) – Bullets flew outside a recording studio in Midtown, Manhattan on Tuesday night during an altercation between two opposing groups.

Three people were shot dead – the youngest was just 19 – and surveillance footage shows the unfolding chaos, CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported.

The video shows a small group approaching a silver car on West 38th Street near Sixth Avenue at around 10:30 pm Suddenly two people exit a stopped car behind a white SUV and approach the group.

As the shots ring out, everyone flies off in different directions, including the stationary car, which heads toward Fifth Avenue.

Within seconds, police officers already present in the area arrived on the scene.

“I heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop around a quarter to 11, I looked out the window and saw people running,” said Midtown resident Michael Goodman.

The victims, aged 19, 24 and 27, were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition.

Police said there was a party at a recording studio that was advertised on social media, then two rival groups from Brooklyn clashed on the street.

Authorities said both sides were armed. Four firearms were recovered, including one believed to be a “phantom weapon”, rendering it untraceable.

The bullets shattered the window of the silver car, pierced a store window twice, and even hit the frame of a hardware store.

“We don’t need this type of violence in our city,” resident Muhammad Milhouse told CBS2’s John Dias. “The kind of thing that is going on here right now, as we come out of the COVID pandemic, we should be more united as a nation and especially as a city. We need to think about more important things: our health and our lives.

Officers stood guard outside the recording studio on Wednesday.

“This morning it was closed, then across the street where I work there is still yellow tape up there,” said Will Corchado.

“Here in Midtown, because of Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue, there is usually a police presence,” Goodman added.

The NYPD said it was interviewing both the victims and the suspects, including a 17-year-old who is believed to be the shooter who was not injured and arrested at the scene.

Police are still trying to determine the cause of the shooting.

Police said the 17-year-old interviewed was previously convicted of shooting when he was 14.

So far, no charges have been laid in this incident.
